In 1855, Mark Twain, or Samuel Clemens, lived in Keokuk, Iowa
where he lodged at a local hotel.
He worked as a printer with his brother Orion and together
they authored Keokuk’s first City Directory. His family
established the town of West Point in 1837 and his great
grandmother is interred in West Point Cemetery. In 1856 Clemens
left printing and became a riverboat pilot, an experience from
which he based several of his well-known novels
