Long before Robert E. Lee made history as a prominent General in the Confederate Army
during the Civil War, the young army lieutenant was sent to Lee County in August, 1837
with a party of surveyors to recommend improvements to navigation between Montrose and
Keokuk due to the dangerous rapids, which were an obstacle to river traffic.
